Description:
Scottish travel company Globespan went into administration yesterday leaving around 300 tourists stranded in Cyprus.
4,500 tourists who booked package holidays or flights through the company, will now have to find alternative flights home.
Victor Mantovani, President of the Association of Cypriot Travel Agents (ACTA) said there are about 300 tourists left in Cyprus with the rest mainly in Egypt, Spain and Portugal.
Flyglobespan was the largest passenger airline in Scotland with six flights a week to Paphos in summer and two per week in winter.
Low budget airlines have stepped in to help stranded passengers with easyjet announcing that stranded people in the Canaries, Cyprus and Egypt can use an easyjet flight back home for £80 sterling per person.
There is some consolation for the package holiday makers, who are entitled to a full refund under terms of the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) ATOL scheme.
Flight only passengers who paid via credit or debit cards costing more than €112 are entitled to a refund under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
The firms collapse also affects over 800 people who stand to lose their jobs. Bruce Cartwright, of PricewaterhouseCoopers who will manage the administration of Globespan, told BBC yesterday "Unfortunately it is absolutely clear that the operation has ceased to fly. The operation is in wind-down, which inevitably means redundancies."
