Cyprus President Pledges to Make 2010 Road Safety Year

15 January 2010

Description:

In a speech during the signing of the European Road Safety Charter, President Demetris Christofias pledged to achieve a drastic reduction in road accidents and declared 2010 as the year of Road Safety, with young people as the focus.

The President stated that the main responsibility to handle this plague belongs to the government and the state, however the active and substantial contribution of the citizens is integral in the effectiveness of the state efforts.

This comes after a total of 240 drivers were found to be over the alcohol limit over the Christmas Holiday period.

Police said 7 people were arrested for driving at more than 150 kmph on the motorway with a total of 340 drivers caught speeding the fastest of which was clocked at 216 kmph.

Christofias described as “unacceptable and completely unreasonable” the endless loss of human lives as well as the destruction of the lives of millions of people who survive.

In Cyprus during the last decade a total of 947 people lost their lives in road accidents and many thousands were injured or left with permanent disabilities.
