UN Secretary General to Visit Cyprus

29 January 2010

Description:

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will be visiting Cyprus from Sunday 31st January until Tuesday 2nd February.

The aim of the visit is to give support to the UN backed efforts of the two leaders and to discuss with them and his special adviser Alexander Downer, how the UN can best help with their efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem and reunify the island.

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou stressed that the visit is a further proof that reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem is high on the priorities of the UN and the international community is concerned with it.

In a statement Mr Ban said “The international community has tremendous goodwill for Cyprus and a strong interest in seeing the Cypriots arrive at a solution.”

A UN peacekeeping operation, known as UNFICYP, has been in place in Cyprus since an outbreak of inter-communal violence in 1964.
