Description:
The Cyprus Parliament are debating a legal bill, tabled by Greens deputy Georgios Perdikis that there should be a complete smoking ban in public areas.
Airport operator Hermes has already banned smoking in the arrivals section of Larnaca Airport, usually the scene of a mass light up as people rush off the plane before collecting their baggage.
Phanos Leventis, speaking on behalf of the Pancyprian restaurants and Entertainment Establishments Owners Association described a full ban as a violation of democracy and a compromise solution whereby creating "areas" where people are sent to smoke an unrealistic alternative.
One solution the Association head argued in favour of are heat recovery ventilation systems, which ensure a high quality of air in bars and nightclubs.
The other alternative will be to create members-only clubs where everyone will be able to smoke without breaking the law.
