Description:
With the completion of two more water desalination plants by 2011 Cyprus hopes to meet all water needs for the island.
Annually Cyprus uses approximately 90 million cubic metres of fresh water, which works out at about 140 litres per person per day.
Agriculture Minister Aegli Pantelaki said “One of the government’s priorities was freeing the water supply from its dependence on rainfall.”
It is hoped this aim will have been realised, when the four desalination plants become operational by 2011.
The desalination plants are scheduled to provide 262,000 cubic metres of fresh water per day, with the current consumer needs around 246,575 cubic metres per day.
According to Giorgos Petrocostas, an officer within the Agriculture Ministry, it is estimated that the four facilities will meet Cyprus’s water needs until 2018.
