Drivers Caught Speeding in Cyprus

10 March 2010

Description:

Cyprus police logged record levels of speeding offences over last weekend.

A 36 year old driver was clocked at an amazing 209 kph on the Nicosia-Limassol highway, a 50 year old driver was caught travelling at 177 kph on the Kofinou-Larnaca road and a 40 year old driver was caught doing 160 kph on the Limassol-Nicosia stretch of the motorway.

All three drivers were arrested and will face a court appearance.

At present 3,313 drivers have over 10 penalty points whilst 8,381 have so far lost their licence since the point system was introduced.

Traffic Police Chief Demetris Demetriou said “Most are under 25-years-old and this is worrying,”

A licence is suspended when the driver has reached 12 points. Demetriou said that most penalty points were awarded for speeding.

Points are deleted from a licence 3 years after the day they were imposed.
