Description:
Cyprus President Christofias has stated that he will not seek re-election in 2013 if the ongoing talks to reunify the island fail.
"I underline clearly; if no Cyprus settlement is reached by the end of my first term, I will not seek a second term. My current term in office will be my first and last," Christofias said during a news conference.
He said that there have been many meetings between the two sides, but that both are still far apart in their positions and that the Turkish Cypriot side was being influenced by Ankara.
Christofias stressed that it would be “a fatal mistake” and a gift to the Turkish side, “if we were to abandon the goal for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.”
The President said the continued violation of international law and the UN Charter by Turkey, which has been addressed by the EU and the UN Security Council, requires the international community to persuade Turkey to change its stance.
He also said that the Greek Cypriot side will continue the ongoing peace talks for a political settlement on the basis of the principle that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”
