Description:
A British tourist who was on holiday in Paphos last summer has been jailed for 10 months after being found guilty of trying to spend a forged €50 note.
According to UK media reports Carl Redden, a Market Trader from Birmingham, who was on holiday with his fiancée, Suzanne Wilson, went into a kiosk to buy lunch. He unknowingly handed over a forged €50 note to the kiosk owner who called the police as soon as he had scanned the note.
Redden was arrested and asked if he had any more euro notes. On inspection it was confirmed that all his euro notes were fakes.
The fake notes were received from his grandmother, aged 69, who was conned into buying them. She had gone to the Post Office to exchange GBP 250 for Euros where she alleges two “well dressed” strangers approached her and offered to exchange the cash for €250. She accepted thinking that the notes were genuine.
In court Redden pleaded guilty, allegedly following advice from his lawyer that he would receive a suspended sentence.
Suzanne Wilson is now pregnant, meaning Redden will likely be in Nicosia prison when his child is born.
The €50 note has been found to be forged the most throughout the Euro zone with most retail outlets scanning all notes to check for forgeries.
