Over the weekend a spring clean operation took place from Bishop’s Palace to Paphos Gate in Nicosia.
 

Two teams of volunteers totalling around 45 people started work sweeping, shovelling and cleaning away litter and abandoned home goods such as fridges and dishwashers.
 

Approximately 20 truckloads of rubbish and unwanted household items were removed over the weekend.
 

Senior Health Inspector at the Nicosia Municipality, Andreas Taliodoros said "When people see that the streets are clean, they won't want to drop litter there. Before now the problem is that when people see litter in the streets, they think it is okay to drop it." He is confident this will have a lasting effect.
 

He added that the municipality is on hand to clear away large items, by prior arrangement; residents just need to call up to arrange collection.
 

It is now planned to have 4 clean-up operations a year, with the next one due on 3^rd May. There will be fewer people involved, all under the employ of the municipality, and the whole city centre will be cleaned.
