Description:
Green Party leader Ioanna Panayiotou released a statement this week urging Cyprus citizens to adopt a more energy efficient lifestyle by changing everyday habits.
His comments to minimise over-consumption and protect the environment could save up to €1,000 a year in the process.
Panayiotou made several suggestions including the importance of recycling household waste, 75% of which is recyclable, as well as electronic devices and batteries. Minimising water wastage and switching off electrical devices when not in use.
He also stressed that new houses should incorporate green technologies, such as double glazing, solar water heaters and photovoltaic systems.
Environment Commissioner Charalambos Theopemptou said, “If you follow rules on building eco-homes you reach almost zero energy demands with regards to heating and air-conditioning. In theory, lighting could be one of the only electricity demands.”
Cyprus is still one of the worst countries in Europe for electricity consumption per capita.
Motorists were advised to have regular services and check type pressures, which can save more than 4% of fuel. Whilst speeding above 120kph increases fuel consumption by about 30%.
The greener option is to choose walking or public transport, which would involve a cultural change as at present most citizens only walk a few steps from their private vehicles.
