Description:
Cyprus’s obligation to the EU will mean that fuel tax will increase by almost 10% by mid June.
This will mean a rise of about 7 cents per litre on unleaded petrol and 9 cents per litre on diesel.
The Government announcement at the House Commerce Committee was met with a wave of hostility, especially from opposition parties.
Cyprus has been able to postpone the increase for the last two years but it was made clear this week that there could be no more delays.
According to Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides, the EU has given Cyprus a two-month postponement to impose the new increases – but that’s it.
He also stated that Cyprus will still remain one of the cheapest EU states when it comes to consumption tax on fuel.
The increase will have a knock on effect with regard to basic food stuffs with the extra fuel charge for delivery being passed on to the consumer.
With a lack of alternative energy sources and an unsatisfactory public transport system this fuel price increase will have a direct effect on the Cypriot public and the economy; especially at a time when unemployment figures are rising dramatically.
