The foundation stone for the second wind park in Cyprus was laid at a ceremony yesterday; the construction of the Aeolian Park will be completed in 2011.
Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Antonis Paschalides said that the Aeolian Park “Alexirgos” will have a total power of 31.5 megawatt and will consist of 21 wind turbines of 1.5MW each.
Paschalides said exploiting wind energy has a lot of benefits for Cyprus from a economical, environmental and tourism point of view.
He added that the park will contribute greatly to the production of energy through renewable energy sources.
The Minister also said that the first Aeolian park in Paphos will soon be completed providing a total power of 82MW.
Cyprus, he added, has a long way to go to meet the commitment of covering its energy needs with 13% renewable energy sources by 2020.
Addressing the event, Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis said that renewable energy sources are the sole energy that can help Cyprus move from its dependency on imported fuel, increase the security of energy production and reduce the pollution of the environment.
The government of Cyprus, he went on to add, attributes great importance to the use of technologies which allow the exploitation of renewable energy sources.
