Description:
Construction workers carrying out Phase B of the coastal pedestrian footpath in Protaras have uncovered a radial cave, which appears to belong to the Hellenistic or Roman period.
During the construction work the ground gave way and revealed a cave containing “what appear to be four ancient basins, in other words ancient tombs, indeed one with coloured pictures, some bones and a number of amphorae,” according to Paralimni Mayor Andreas Evangelou.
“Work stopped at once and the Paralimni Municipality and the Department of Antiquities were informed, “ he said, adding that “the cave has been temporarily covered and is guarded by the Paralimni Police.”
An evaluation of the site will take place today by the Department of Antiquities.
The Island of Cyprus is well known for archaeological discoveries the most famous of which is the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos.
