EU Gives Cyprus Top Marks For Clean Bathing Water
A study carried out for six months from May to October 2009 puts Cyprus above the European average of 96% for coastal bathing areas and 90% for rivers and lakes.
This is the second year running that Cyprus has complied with the EU guidelines for mandatory cleanliness levels, scoring top marks in the latest EU annual bathing water report.
Government Bill Passed to Cap Fuel Prices
The House yesterday unanimously passed a bill enabling the Commerce Minister to impose a cap on both wholesale and retail prices of fuel and liquid gas for up to 45 days.
The new law was passed in order to prevent a repeat of the lightening strike by petrol stations in February when an 8 day price cap was found to be unworkable.
With the introduction of the new bill if a government considers that fair pricing is not guaranteed by free market conditions – which can be argued in view of Cyprus’ small and isolated fuel market – and can reasonably establish that profiteering is taking place, then it can cap prices (or alternatively profit margins) if this is in the public interest.
Weather to Improve by Sunday
The unseasonal weather conditions experienced over the last few days is set to continue today before settling down over the weekend, according to meteorological reports.
This afternoon could again see rain, especially in higher altitudes and inland areas, but conditions will improve tomorrow with rainfall restricted to higher altitude areas.
A meteorological office spokesman said “inland temperatures of around 30 ºC are slightly below the average of 33-34 ºC seen this time of year, as are western temperatures of 25-26 ºC and 28 ºC of remaining coastal areas”, however adding that, “these are expected to begin to rise from Saturday, approaching and possibly even exceeding the average on Sunday as weather conditions settle”.
Eurocypria Receives Cash Injection
The government has given Eurocypria a controversial €35 million cash injection in order to prevent the airline collapsing within days.
Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said “the decision to increase Eurocypria’s capital was the right one, as it secured a large tourist flow to the island, while protecting Cyprus’ credibility with the banks”.
The cash injection will allow Eurocypria to continue to operate until the end of summer 2010.
Police want CCTV in Town Centres
The police leadership have increased their campaign to have CCTV (Close circuit television cameras) installed in town centres in order to increase security.
The police are planning a series of measures to combat vandalism and graffiti in town centres across Cyprus.
Mobile and foot patrols are expected to increase but CCTV is seen as the main deterrent to combat crime.
Cyprus Economy Shows Signs of Recovery
Cyprus’s economy returned a growth of 0.1% in the first quarter of this year according to the statistics department.
It is thought that improved performances in tourism and industry were the reason.
