Description:
The Cypriot Government is looking at ways to reduce alcohol related road traffic accidents, by introducing a lower breathalyser limit for certain categories of driver.
The plan is to reduce the current limit of 22mg to just 9 mg, or about half a glass of beer for new drivers (up to one year), HGV drivers, dangerous goods drivers, motorcyclists and taxis.
Communication and Works Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis said: "We need to do something, as deaths have risen by 38 per cent this year. We have concluded a draft legislation, which is now in the hands of the Attorney-general, which will provide for a maximum limit of nine milligrams for certain categories of driver. This is around half a glass of beer."
Also planned is a review of the penalty points system to encourage safe drivers and make banning repeat offenders more easy.
It is unlikely that the news measures will become law before the summer break as they are awaiting approval by the Attorney General, before being debated in Parliament and then approved by the Council of Ministers.
