Plans to upgrade Cyprus’s public transport system have been revealed by Communications Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis.
From 5th July 2010 Nicosia will have 7 new bus routes making the total number of routes 20. The frequency of pickups will also increase, with a waiting time of 15 minutes during peak hours.
Marcoullis said “Our intention is that this will gradually be reduced even more, with the aim of having buses every five minutes.”
Prices will be reduced from €1.30 to €1 with daily tickets costing €2 enabling holders to travel throughout the Nicosia district. Weekly tickets can also be purchased for €10, monthly €30 and yearly €300.
The new routes will include Universities and areas with cafes in order to cater for the needs of young people. Night routes will also be included over the weekend from 11pm to 5am.
The Ministry‘s future plan is to create park and ride facilities where people can park their vehicles for free and get on public transport. The first of these will be at Makarios Stadium, the new General Hospital and Solomou Square.
