Description:
Two Debenhams stores in Nicosia and Limassol are planning to install indoor “smoking cafe” areas.
Managing Director George Aniliades of Ermes who operate the Debenhams stores in Cyprus said “We respect the law (banning smoking in indoor public spaces) and we respect both our smoking and non smoking customers.”
Aniliades said “We’re trying to give the option to smoke within the law. Many of our customers are smokers and we are trying to give them the option within the law.”
The ban which was brought into force in Cyprus at the beginning of this year forbids smoking in all internal public spaces, but is allowed in internal courtyards and external areas that are covered by a canopy, such as the outside of cafes, courtyards of restaurants and bars.
Plans are going ahead with the new “smoking cafe” already under construction in Limassol and a Nicosia store employee confirmed that a permit had been granted for their store.
Some non smokers are outraged at the plans which they feel are a blatant attempt to flout the law.
