The Cabinet in Cyprus decided on Tuesday that online gambling in Cyprus should be made illegal.
 

Over the last couple of years we have seen an increasing number of betting/gambling shops opened in Cyprus.
 

Whilst it is illegal to gamble in Cyprus and there are no casinos, online gambling where the bets are placed abroad was seen as a loophole in the law.
 

The new decision by the Cabinet will mean that the use of internet casinos, fruit machines and other forms of electronic gambling will be made a criminal offence after approval from the House.
 

However Finance Minister Charilaos Stravrakis said that betting on sports such as football in Cyprus or abroad would not be affected.
