Former President of Cyprus, Tassos Papadopoulos died yesterday afternoon in Nicosia Intensive Care Unit after being in a critical condition during the last few weeks.Mr Papadopoulos, 74, had been suffering from lung cancer and was admitted to Nicosia General hospital in November after suffering from back pains. He was then transferred to the intensive care unit when he experienced breathing difficulties.
He was president of Cyprus from 2003 and brought Cyprus into the European Union in May 2004. He was replaced earlier this year in the Cyprus elections by President Demetris Christofias. President Christofias has expressed his sorrow to the family of Mr. Papadopoulos and to the people of Cyprus.
A three day mourning has been officially decided by the Cyprus Council of Ministers from yesterday and flags will fly at half mast at official buildings during this time.
The funeral will take place at Agia Sophia Church in Strovolos, Nicosia on Monday15th December at 11:00 in the morning.
