Description:
Temperatures are set to rise over the weekend reaching a maximum temperature of 41 degrees.
Alarming levels of humidity have also been recorded by the MET services. Yesterday humidity levels reached 98% in Larnaca.
Meteorological officer Stalo Papachristou said yesterday “We expect that tomorrow it will get very hot early in the morning (around 11am), and it is likely to remain at 39 degrees until five or six in the afternoon”.
She added that we are likely to face extremely high temperatures and high humidity levels throughout August.
The Labour Inspection Department is monitoring the situation and will issue guidelines concerning safe practices for working outdoors. In extreme weather conditions, they have the discretionary power to ban work in open spaces.
Already this summer a number of outdoor workers have suffered from heatstroke, and one person died last month.
It is advisable to stay out of the midday sun and where possible stay in a shaded area whilst outdoors.
