Description:
The heat wave over the weekend saw record high temperatures of 46 degrees Celsius recorded in Nicosia.
This beats the previous highest recorded temperature set over half a century ago of 44.4 degrees Celsius in mid August 1956.
Meteorological Department spokesman Kleanthis Nicolaides said “Temperatures of up to 40 degrees are to be expected in late July and early August, but Sunday’s record was about 8 degrees higher than normal temperatures for this period of the year."
Temperatures are said to remain 4 or 5 degrees higher than normal until Wednesday when cooler weather is predicted.
The Meteorological Department spokesman said that the heatwave was caused by air remaining mostly static for long periods.
