Assumption Day in Cyprus

15 August 2010

Description:

Today is the Great Feast of the Mother of God of the Eastern Orthodox religion. This is held annually on the 15th August and is a public holiday in Cyprus.

The celebration is in the belief that the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, was physically taken up to heaven at the end of her life. This event is known as the Dormition (falling asleep) of the Theotokos (Mother of Jesus).

Celebrations take place across Cyprus and great feasts are held in commemoration of the Dormition of the Theotokos.

Many other countries also celebrate this day including Greece, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Malta, Italy and Lebanon.

Temperatures should start to drop a bit as this is seen as the height of summer for many Cyprus residents.
