Description:
A new law which allows Cyprus police to tow away any vehicle that does not have the correct registration plates, or has partially covered or no plates will come into force as of 1st October 2010.
Traffic Police Chief Demetris Demetriou announced that all members of the traffic police will be fully briefed by 1st October, so that implementation of the new law can begin next month.
The law gives extensive powers to the Road Transport Department and police to confiscate any car or motorcycle parked or moving in a public place without registration plates or with plates that are not fully visible to the human eye or cameras, or plates that do not meet proper legal requirements.
The vehicle will be towed away and the owner or holder will be informed in writing the same day.
To collect the vehicle, the owner will have to fit correct plates, present all necessary documents and pay the cost of the tow-truck.
Failure to do so, within 2 months will lead to the vehicle being put on public auction or else destroyed depending on its age and condition. If the vehicle is not registered, the owner will be given the chance to get it registered on the same day.
