EU To Help Fund Cyprus Drought

07 November 2008

Description:

The EU has proposed to grant Cyprus €7.6 million to assist with the drought crisis this year. The European Commission Solidarity Fund grants aid to member states in the event of a major natural disaster.

The water crisis in Cyprus this year reached drastic levels with its water reserves almost drying up. Help was provided by Greece who arranged tankers of water to be shipped to the Cyprus port of Limassol easing the situation.

Local water authorities have cut the water supply to many homes and businesses to three times a week to try to reduce the amount of water used. Even the fact that Cyprus has two desalination plants working at full capacity hasn't been enough to fulfill the demand of the islands residents and the visiting tourists.
