Engomi Municipality Tackles Dog Mess

Description:

The authorities in the Nicosia municipality of Engomi have recently placed 65 dog litter bins throughout the municipality in an attempt to make dog owners responsible for their pets.
 

This is the third initiative to try and educate dog owners of their responsibilities. Previously free doggy bags and shovels have been handed out to people registering their dogs but it seemed that they were never used. The Mayor also personally visited children in schools and  handed doggy bags out to children who had pets.
 

The bins are hygienically sealed so that no smells escape and will be emptied once a week.
 

If this initiative works maybe more municipalities will take a similar approach to solve the problem.
