Description:
Cyprus and Malta will be allocated €20 million each in order to implement local energy projects and participate in the EU funding for higher internet speeds if the European Commission's proposal goes ahead.
The proposal is part of a €5 billion investment in the EU's energy, internet broadband infrastructure and Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) covering 2009 and 2010.
The overall aim is to have 100% broadband access across all areas of the EU, but currently 30% of rural areas lack access to broadband services.
The European Commission has also proposed allocating €1.75 billion for electricity and gas interconnectors, €1.25 billion for carbon capture and storage projects and €500 million for offshore wind projects across the EU.
