Description:
According to water board officials, the water situation in Cyprus has improved and they hope to be able to reduce water cuts throughout the island.
The quantity of stored water is up on the same time last year by approximately 6.5 million cubic metres.
The recent rainfalls have improved the water supplies in the rivers, streams and dams which is very encouraging.
Any decision to reduce the water cuts would be ultimately taken by the Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment. Many factors would need to be taken into consideration before making such a decision.
The dams are only around 12% full at present and it is still not good enough compared to when they were almost up to maximum capacity in 2004.
The Episkopi desalination project which was due to start in 2010 looks likely to be delayed due to contract issues. The plant will take approximately 2 years to build.
