Description:
The Cyprus Council of Ministers is to review for approval the long awaited bill to allow the operation of cremations in Cyprus. If the bill is approved, it would then be presented to the House for further approval.
Although this would appear to be very positive steps in the right direction, in October 2006 a Cyprus Interior Ministry official was appointed to prepare a report for the proposed law and the law was expected to be passed by early 2007.
EU law governing crematoria has changed in the last couple of years and special filters need to be fitted to prevent harmful elements being released into the atmosphere. This would likely increase the costs involved.
Location of a crematorium is also a major concern as the Cyprus Government had suggested building them on industrial estates. From both a mourner's and a logistical point of view this would not be a good solution and a green area would need to be found away from residential areas.
