Description:
A law proposing the use of cranes to remove cars from disabled parking bays is being discussed by the Cyprus Parliament.
The new law was discussed earlier this week by the House Communications Committee, in the presence of members of the Communications and Justice Ministries.
Committee Chairman Zacharias Koulias of DIKO said the aim was to resolve the problems faced by disabled people, who cannot find parking spaces as they are being used by 'unscrupulous drivers'.
Speaking on behalf of the Communications Ministry, Klelia Petridou said the ministry was already in the process of planning an increase in disabled parking spaces in public areas and expanding the relevant law to all public and governmental buildings.
As the law stands at present the police have no authority to intervene if someone is parked in a designated disabled parking space.
Koulias said ""The Committee feels a car's removal is much more of a deterrent than the current penalty, which is merely a fine."
