Police Officers Suspended From Duties in Cyprus

25 March 2009

Description:

According to a police statement, the ten police officers amazingly acquitted last week of beating two students have been suspended from duties pending disciplinary proceedings.

Cyprus Justice Minister, Loucas Louca has confirmed that a new investigation will take place looking into other possible offences.

Whilst the investigation is ongoing, the suspension will continue. The investigation is independent to the Cyprus Attorney-General's appeal of the criminal court decision.

Many people are still angry that the court didn't allow the video evidence showing the police officers beating the two students in 2005.

Since the acquittal, demonstrators have placed bananas outside the entrance to the Nicosia courts - a reference to Cyprus being a 'Banana Republic'. Their protest banners reading 'Disgrace!' and 'This country deserves better'.
