Description:
The long awaited allocated dog beaches in each municipality in Cyprus looks set to face further delays.
The Cyprus Central Foreshore Committee has been waiting for each municipality to set aside an area of coastline where dogs are allowed to enter the water.
A decision was expected last October, however only 'Louma' beach in Ayia Napa has so far been designated. Shepherds used to take their flocks to Louma to bathe in the sea. Ayia Napa allocated this beach on its own initiative.
By law, the Committee can allocate beaches without approval from the municipality.
Only Larnaca Municipality has so far shown any interest in the scheme. Therefore, because the Committee is legally bound to set up the beaches, they will have to do so without the cooperation of the municipality or community.
When the beaches have been allocated by the Committee, some money would need to be invested at the sites for toilets, showers, dustbins and cleaning up the area. Roads may also need some work to improve access to the area.
Maybe this is why the municipalities are showing little, if any interest.
