Description:
According to a report put before the EU parliament, British military bases in Cyprus, Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands should be at the service of the European Union to protect shipping lanes.
In Cyprus there are two main British military bases, Akrotiri and Dhekelia but naval crafts normally dock at Limassol Port.
The report was commissioned by the EU parliament's subcommittee on security and defence policies expressing the need to match the military strength of Asian navies.
However, the Ministry of Defence in the UK has said that British bases would remain under Britain's control and not under the jurisdiction of the EU.
